Like many people, I pretty-much live in boat shoes during the warmer months. However, I find fall to be a bit of a gray-area, and my affixation never seems to go away until the winter. While many purists say to stick them in storage after Labor Day, I defend my beloved boat shoes and wear them right up until the first sight of snow (when those non-slip soles become basically the exact opposite of that).
While I refuse to let socks anywhere near boat shoes in the summer, in the fall I break out socks that just scream 'cold weather', which are of course, Fair Isle socks. If these don't 'fall-up' a pair of boat shoes, I don't know what does.
