You wouldn't think that this disheveled guy is the reason that we all geek out over RRL. But this is the man that essentially defined the entire image, the aesthetic, and the general nostalgia that you get from the RL brands. Doug is one of the oldest members of the Ralph Lauren team, starting out in the 1980's as one of the original stylists; developing looks for their showrooms, stores, and Ad campaigns. Fast forward almost three decades, he currently holds the title of Head of Ralph Lauren Vintage. Now i'm not exactly sure what that job title entails, but i'm fairly certain that it is A) Awesome, and B) Exposes him to some of the most amazing vintage items on the planet. I hope one day to meet Mr. Bihlmaier, shake his hand, and thank him for....everything.

ReplyDeleteI also see a lot of his grandad Archie in him. Doug in one of a kind but then so is Kathy his wife. They both make wintage look great. Grew up wi\th both of them in Osborne and even though Doug is a step cousin, he and Kathy are family.
ReplyDeleteI had the distinct pleasure of working for Doug in the 80's and 90's. He is indeed a rare and clever character with a keen eye and a warm and tender heart. I am delighted to see that he is still causing a stir in both his work and his genuine sense of style! You can take the boy out of Kansas, but you can't take the Kansas out of the boy.
ReplyDeleteI worked as Doug's assistant for a couple years in the 80's ... He was, by far, the best boss in the whole wide world. When I get dressed in the morning, trying to pull my look together, I often ask myself "what would Doug do?" Miss talking to him ... he was really easy to talk to ...
ReplyDeleteI think he gave me my first job out of college at the polo shop in highland park… such an intuitive, natural funny guy. We observed everything he did!
ReplyDeleteI met Doug at the Highland Park Polo store too. He was a younger man back then but still had that killer style that others only dream of. I remember him wearing a red tartan plaid dress shirt with a yellow Pheasant wool tie. I had never considered this until I saw him wearing it, then the rest is history. He’s still today setting the bar really high for relaxed men’s style. One day I hope to see him again.
